When it comes to gaming laptops, both HP Omen and Asus ROG are solid brands to reckon with. While HP has been lauded for their robust office laptops, ROG has carved a considerable chunk of the gaming niche for itself.

This article compares the HP Omen 15 EN0001AX and the Asus ROG Strix G15 G512LI – HN059T as both of these laptops are all-around performers. While the HP Omen’s design is more subtle in nature, the Asus ROG Strix is a more ‘traditional’ gaming laptop with its RGB-backlit keyboard and angular design.

Let us find out which provides more bang for your buck below:

Pricing

Since both HP Omen and Asus ROG are brands trusted by gamers, they have been priced quite competitively. While the HP Omen 15 costs ₹ 72,500, the Asus ROG G15 is priced at ₹ 82,990. The price difference might seem huge on paper; however, a quick glance at the specs sheet reveals the reason for the same.

Several factors increase the price of the Asus ROG, such as having an Intel CPU, comparatively better display in terms of colour accuracy, better port selection and more. These aspects factor in increasing the Asus laptop’s price compared to the HP. However, despite the comparison, the HP laptop is no slouch either.

The HP Omen comes with Ryzen CPU, which is famous for being a multitasking workhorse, a fast display, and the build quality that HP is renowned for. These factors help it take a stand and make a solid case for itself when beating the Asus ROG Strix G15.

Since this is a comparison, we should add that both laptops are shipped with Nvidia GTX 1650 Ti, the better version of the Nvidia GTX 1650 graphic card. Hence, the gaming performance of both laptops is similar apart from some games that are more CPU intensive than others.

Design

When it comes to design, we personally prefer the angular and RGB-infused design of the Asus ROG G15 compared to the subtle professional look of the HP Omen 15. While the subtlety of the HP laptop might be preferable to some, we love the fact that Asus ROG has stayed true to its name – Republic of Gamers and provided the looks to match the performance.

Looks are subjective in nature and hence, let us provide you with some observations that would help you choose one over the other. One word summarises the overall design language starting with the HP Omen – minimal. The HP design team has done a fantastic job keeping the gaming laptop look professional, almost like a sleeper model in car culture.

The HP Omen 15 also looks modern due to the premium metal chassis and the micro-edge bezels of the display on three sides. The top of the laptop simply has the Omen logo, while the keyboard on the inside sports a ‘gamer-looking’ font. The laptop also comes with a dedicated Omen key and an enlarged touchpad.

Coming to the Asus ROG Strix G15, the laptop is a beauty with a bold ROG logo on the top that has a brushed aluminium finish. The bottom of the laptop screen has an angular cut in the bottom bezel that makes it look very much distinctive from other laptops, even in the ROG range. The laptop also has dedicated right and left buttons on the touchpad and dedicated keys on top of the keyboard keys for additional ease of use.

Display

To cut a long discussion short, let us begin this section by mentioning the name of the winner of this specific section: Asus ROG Strix G15. The Asus has a 144 Hz display that is miles ahead of HP’s standard 60 Hz display in the HP Omen 15. However, as any gamer would know, refresh rate is not the only parameter to consider while choosing a display.

While the Asus might have the clear advantage on the refresh speed, the HP is not far behind. Both units have 15.6” Full HD (1920×1080) backlit LED displays with an anti-glare coating. Both displays have a peak brightness of 250 nits and a 45% NTSC colour gamut. Both laptops also possess an impressive 170-degree viewing angle due to IPS technology.

While the speed difference in refresh rate between the displays is clearly visible in fast-paced games such as Forza Horizon 5 and FPS like counter-strike, it is not a concern if you are playing offline as the standard refresh rate of 60 Hz is proven to be more colour accurate for normal daily usage. Hence, you can opt for the HP Omen 15 if you are not concerned about the display’s refresh rate.

Processor

The HP Omen 15 comes with 4th Ga en AMD Ryzen 5 – 4600H processor, while the Asus ROG Strix G15 has the 10th Gen Intel i5 – 10300H CPU. Both of these processors are equally potent in their respective spectrums. While the Intel chipset is known for single thread processing suitable for running even CPU-intensive games, the AMD Ryzen series has been making a splash due to its advanced multi-threading processing that helps in multi-tasking and completing tasks faster.

The HP Omen 15’s AMD chipset is clocked at 3.0 GHz base clock speed, and it can boost to 4.0 GHz depending on usage. It possesses 6 cores and has an 8 MB L3 cache for blazing-fast performance. On the other hand, the Asus ROG Strix 15’s Intel chipset is clocked at 2.5 GHz base speed, and it can turbo-boost up to 4.5 GHz depending on the requirements. It comes with 4 cores and 8 threads with 8 MB of Intel Smart Cache, which is Intel speak for L3 CPU Cache.

As is evident from the numbers, both the CPUs are at par with one another in terms of performance. The significant observable difference in their performance comes from the fact that certain games prefer having better CPU while others are GPU-intensive. Hence, it boils down to your preference of games in deciding which laptop to opt for in terms of their processors.

Graphic Card

Another common factor between both the HP Omen 15 and Asus ROG Strix G15 is the dedicated graphic card from Nvidia, the GeForce GTX 1650 Ti. Being the higher version of the normal Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650, the ‘Ti’ version is more powerful even on mobile architecture.

The dedicated GPU consists of 4GB DDR6 memory that is sufficient for playing most of the current games on ultra graphic settings. However, one should understand that it is not as powerful as the latest RTX series of GPUs from Nvidia.

The RTX series is aimed at professional gamers who love to game at the maximum available graphic settings, and hence, the laptops equipped with those GPUs are also priced steeply. Therefore, considering the RTX series, both of the laptops we are comparing today are bargains as they provide similar graphic fidelity at a much cheaper rate.

Memory

The RAM or system memory is an essential aspect of any gaming laptop. Both HP and Asus have provided adequate RAM capacities in their gaming machines that we are comparing today.

While the HP Omen 15 packs in 8 GB DDR4 RAM running at 3200 MHz, the Asus ROG Strix G15 comes equipped with 8 GB DDR4 RAM running at 2933 MHz. Additionally, you can upgrade the RAM capacities for additional performance on both laptops. While the HP supports RAM capacities up to 16GB, Asus has gone a step further and provided support for up to 32 GB RAM in their laptop.

As we can infer from this comparison, the higher clock frequency does provide a marginal increase in performance for the HP Omen 15 compared with the Asus ROG Strix G15. However, during practical daily usage and gaming performance, the difference would be hardly noticeable.

Ports

Since HP and Asus have been in the laptop building business for a long time, they have grown accustomed to user needs regarding connectivity from their laptops. Hence, they have been able to provide robust connectivity options, which is evident in their port selection and wireless options.

Let us start by discussing the Asus ROG Strix G15. Asus has intelligently provided most of the ports at the backside of the laptop to ensure that there are no obstructions during long gaming sessions. At the laptop’s rear, between the twin heat grills at both edges, we have the following ports: 1 Ethernet RJ-45 port, 1 HDMI 2.0b port, 1 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port and a barrel plug port for charging the laptop. On the side, we have some additional auxiliary ports such as 3 USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports and an audio combo jack for plugging in your earphones or headphones.

Coming to the HP Omen 15, we have got the following ports: 1 Ethernet RJ-45 port, 1 HDMI 2.0a port, 1 USB Type-C port, 3 USB Type-A ports, 1 Mini DisplayPort, 1 AC smart pin for charging and a headphone microphone combo jack. When it comes to wireless connectivity, both laptops are on par with one another, with both of them having Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. Hence, there is practically no competition in the port selection department.

Conclusion

As is evident from this comparison, both the HP Omen 15 and the Asus ROG Strix G15 are solid performers as gaming laptops. While the Asus has a marginal lead with a higher refresh rate display running at 144 Hz and gamer aesthetics, the HP can stand up for itself with faster RAM at 3200 MHz and a better CPU. However, when it comes to real-world performance, it boils down to individual gaming preferences. Hence, gamers who buy these laptops often choose one over the other based on their subjective brand preference, game selection or even the laptop’s design. Irrespective of whichever one you choose, both laptops are bang for your buck.
